Onam 2014 Special Trains for Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Southern Railway will run a handful of namesake special trains in September 2014 on the occasion of the Onam festival in Kerala between various destinations in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and also Mangalore Jn (Kankanady). SWR has announced a Premium Special train between Bangalore and Trivandrum as well! It looks like even though Southern Railway is are desperately short of money, they really do not want to make use of the easiest money-spinner route in South India. Also, SCR and CR will also run a pair of special trains to Kerala, from Hyderabad and Mumbai (LTT) respectively.

This list also includes special trains by Southern Railway for the Vinayaka Chathurthi Long Weekend. Click on the train number to view full and detailed timetable. Note: Thiruvonam falls on September 07 2014 Sunday.

02657/02658 Bangalore Cantonment – Trivandrum Central – Bangalore Cantt. Premium Superfast Onam Special (SWR)

  • 02657 Premium SF special will leave from Bangalore Cantonment BNC to Thiruvananthapuram Central TVC at 1915 on September 04, 05, 06, 07 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Timetable: ED: 2335, CBE: 0100 (Fr, Sa, Su, Mo), ERN: 0428, arrives TVC at 0820 (Fr, Sa, Su, Mo)
  • 02658 Premium SF special will leave from Trivandrum Central TVC to Bangalore Cantonment BNC at 1900 on September 05, 06, 07, 08 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday) 2014. Timetable: ERN: 2223, CBE: 0210 (Sa, Su, Mo, Tu), ED: 0330, arrives BNC at 0810 (Sa, Su, Mo, Tu).

Composition: 01 AC 2 tier, 02 AC 3 tier, 16 Sleeper Coaches, 02 SLRs (No General Class) (21 coaches).

Route and Stoppages: Erode, Coimbatore, Ernakulam Town (North).

Finally, a sensible special train for Onam from Bangalore to Kerala! But a premium train with varying fares as per demand, no cancelation or Tatkal. No stops at Palakkad, Thrissur, Kottayam, Chengannur or Kollam. A premium train can have only 5 stops. As it arrives at 0100, the Coimbatore stop makes little sense. Instead, Erode should’ve been made a tech halt and Thrissur, Kottayam, Chengannur and Kollam should’ve been allowed as commercial stops. Else, It remains to be seen how good the patronage will be. And this is the same timetable the new Bangalore – Trivandrum Premium Superfast will follow. Sad that there is still no special train from Bangalore to North Kerala (Malabar). Book early to avoid increased rates!
