New Trains Announced to Mizoram (Sairang/Aizawl)

Indian Railways reaches the Mizoram capital with the completion of the Bairabi-Sairang line

Indian Railways have announced tentative timetable for trains that will soon run to Mizoram proper with the Northeast Frontier railway completing construction of the railway line to the state capital. With this, another state in the Northeast is set to receive proper rail connectivity. Though a railway line had reached Mizoram 10 years earlier, it was just a few meters past the border of the state and served mainly as a supply line for the extension work of the line further south to the state capital, Aizawl.

Mizoram’s railway history was inaugurated on 21st March 2016 when a goods train rolled into Bairabi, a small town just inside the border of Mizoram with Assam on the banks of the Tlawng river. This first railway line to Mizoram ran from Khatakhal Jn in Assam, 58 kilometers due north, and took around 8 years to complete. However, Mizos had to wait for another 10 years for a proper connectivity to their state capital. The 51 km line from Bairabi to Sairang, a western suburb of the capital city Aizawl was in the works for more than a decade and has been only recently completed. The line is another engineering marvel as all railway lines in the Northeast are with the extremely mountainous and forested terrain full of ridges and canyons.

Salient features of the Bairabi – Sairang line (Mizoram)

  • Line falls under the jurisdiction of the Silchar division of the Northeast Frontier railway zone
  • Partly electrified single line (All trains will run on diesel traction)
  • Length: 51.38 km
  • 142 bridges (55 major bridges and 87 minor bridges)
  • 23 tunnels
  • Four stations (Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, Sairang)
  • Terminal station: Sairang, 10 kilometers east of Aizawl.
  • Cost of construction: Rs. 8071 crores
  • The Sairang bridge (on approach to the station) is the tallest pier bridge in India at 104 meters.
  • A deadly accident occurred during the construction of the bridge on 23 August 2023 when a girder collapse caused 26 workers to lose their lives.

The line is planned to be extended to various locations on the Myanmar border and to Imphal.

The new trains announced to run to Mizoram soon after the inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang line (which is slated to be on Saturday the 13th of September) are as below. Please note that all the timetables are tentative are may change in the future.

The Rail Route to Mizoram

Guwahati is the railway gateway to the Northeast and the Guwahati – Lumding Jn fully electrified double railway line connects all four states of Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram and Tripura. From Lumding a partly electrified single line heads south to traverse a hundred and fifty kilometers of some of the most treacherous and beautiful terrain in the world to reach Badarpur Jn from where lines to three states diverge. The line to Mizoram will part from the nearby station of Khatakhal Jn to run southwards for another 150 kilometers to reach Sairang.

New Trains Announced for Mizoram

A weekly Rajdhani Express to Delhi, a daily overnight train to Guwahati and a tri-weekly service to Kolkata are the new trains announced to Mizoram at present. Their details are given below.

Division: SCL | Distance: 2504 km | Running time: 43h 25m | 19 halts | Days of Service: F / Sun | Avg Speed: 58 kmph

The best part of each new North Eastern state getting connected with the Indian Railways is that they immediately get a dedicated Rajdhani Express directly to their capital city from Delhi. And it is no different for Mizoram. The Mizoram Rajdhani was the first train announced to run. It runs once a week and takes nearly two days to reach Delhi from Aizawl.

The Mizoram Rajdhani shares its slot, timings and stoppages with the Tripura Rajdhani from Badarpur Jn (in Assam) onwards until Delhi.

An interesting fact of the Mizoram Rajdhani: The rake will for now be maintained at Silchar, the divisional headquarters which is 153 km away. So the train takes an empty trip all the way to Silchar and back every week (including a reversal at Khatakhal). I think with some sort of PFTR at Sairang it could be run as a revenue service in the form of a weekly Sairang – Silchar train.

A sensible, daily overnighter from Aizawl to Guwahati that will predictably turn out to be the lifeline of the state for all that it’s worth.

I think there should be at least another daily day time train to Guwahati and probably a weekly superfast service to Bangalore added to the list as well. Well if they are announced they will be posted here.
